Specific Insights

These are a few of our favorite stats, ones that can and should be used by all CGM wearers:

Mean (avg) glucose
% Of Time Above, Below, Within Target Range
Standard Deviation
# Of High & Low Excursions Per Week

And a trendgraph analysis can reveal to the wearer:

The effects of different food types
The effectiveness of the bolus amount
The duration of bolus action
Postprandial spikes
Basal/Overnight patterns
Pramlintide/GLP-1 Influence
The effects of exercise
The impact of stress

Now let's take a look at a series of case studies which will help illustrate the concepts we've discussed so far.

Case Study 1: Basal Insulin Regulation
Take a look at the graphs below.
In the image on the left we can see a marked drop in blood glucose in the predawn hours and late afternoon that would indicate that medication or basal insulin doses have been overly aggressive.
The right image shoes an overnight rise that indicates a need for medication, or a basal insulin increase.

Case Study 2: Basal Insulin Regulation

In this image we see a patient on MDI who has been letting blood sugars ride high in the evening, likely not correcting highs or underbolusing for evening foods due to over night drops in blood sugar. This indicates excess basal insulin. With less basal insulin bolus doses can be increased during the day to gain time in range, improve quality of sleep and patient safety.
