Case Study 9: Impact of Stress

Take a look at the graphs below.

In the left image we can see a marked drop in blood glucose in the predawn hours and late afternoon that would indicate that medication or basal insulin doses have been overly aggressive.

The right image shoes an overnight rise that indicates a need for medication, or a basal insulin increase.

Case Study 10: Impact of Various Food Types

CGM therapy allows us to better observe our digestion timing and how to more accurately match this to our insulin timing. It also allows type 2 patients to understand how glycemic index impacts their blood sugars and how to best time medications, exercise and foods to best meet their management goals.

Case Study 11: Impact of High Fat Meals

One area that can also raise A1C without our ever seeing it on SMBG is the metabolic impact of high fat foods. Patients often complain that they go to bed with good blood sugars, but that they then rise over night, or that they go to bed in range and wake in range but their A2C remains high

High fat foods cause a state of insulin resistance for 8 hours following the meal that are easy to spot on CGM reports. This is often true of weekends when we are more likely to eat out and at times of holiday celebration.
