Consider Surgery

Surgery is another option to consider if weight loss goals are not achieved.  It is recommended for individuals with a BMI over 35 if they have other comorbidities and over 40 if they do not.

Surgery may be recommended for:

BMI > 35 with comorbidities

BMI > 40 without comorbidities

The Sleeve has become the most common surgical option as it is as effective as Roux-en Y and has shown to have less complications over the long term.

Adjustable gastric banding (Lap Band)

  - minimally invasive, reversible

  -  Limited long term success

  - Recent decline of procedures

Sleeve gastrectomy

  - 80% of stomach removed

  - Similar long term weight loss to Roux-en Y

Roux-en Y gastric bypass

  - Very invasive, rerouting of gastrointestinal tract

  - High risk of vitamin deficiencies without supplementation
