Treatment
Options
Next
we will review treatment options for people with
diabetes. Whether a patient has type 1 or type 2
diabetes, they will likely benefit from diet
modifications and physical activity.
For
type 1 diabetes, insulin treatment will be
necessary.
Type
2 diabetes is treated with weight loss efforts,
diet, and exercise. If these treatments do not
adequately lower blood sugars, then oral
medications may be used. Finally, insulin
treatment may be required if blood sugar levels
remain elevated.
According to the “National Health Interview
Survey: 2007-2009” on adults with diabetes
treated with medications, 58% are treated with
oral medications only, 14% with insulin and oral
medications, and 12% with insulin only. 16% are
not treated with medications.
◦Initial
treatment: diet, exercise,
weight loss
◦If
required: oral medications

As we
can see, there are several treatment factors to
consider in appropriate care and management for
diabetes. A single approach does not apply to
all people with diabetes and care must be
tailored. In the next few slides, we will
overview several treatment options.
