Introduction

Typical body circumference measures
include the mid-upper arm, waist, and hip. Methods for these measures are
described in Table 4 and illustrated in Figures 8 through 10. Figure 8a. Illustration of Mid-Upper Arm Circumference Measurement
The mid-upper arm circumference or "midarm circumference" (MAC) is used to compare to population norms and estimate muscle and fat areas when used in conjunction with a triceps fatfold.
The waist circumference is used with the hip circumference to determine a waist to hip ratio. Males with a waist:hip of >1.0 and females with >0.8 are regarded as "apple-shaped" (as opposed to "pear-shaped") and may be at higher risk for heart disease.8 9 10 Figure 9.
