This study
investigated factors that may affect the ability of patients to adjust to living
with an ostomy. Authors used an existing survey (the Ostomy Adjustment Scale or
OAS) and a new survey developed by the principle investigator (Survey of
Perioperative Factors of Ostomy Adjustment or SPFOA). The results were compared
with previous studies and to identify the factors that are most associated with
positive and negative short-term and long-term adjustment to living with an
ostomy. Factors positively affecting adjustment included the education provided
by an ostomy-specialist nurse and long-term illness. Negative impact was seen in
patients who had concerns about obtaining their ostomy supplies. The authors
concluded that these factors can assist in tailoring education and advocacy to
improve adjustment to the ostomy.
